Why I Decided to Give Creating a Consulting Company a Second Shot

#1

Welcome! I have started this newsletter to help those small government contractors who use Deltek Costpoint gain some clarity to this very complex accounting system. While this first post is more sentimental and the backstory of why I have chosen to pursue this path, going forward, the weekly newsletter will be more technical.

As you read the story below it will be come more clear, but I hope you enjoy the pink and purple colors that all four of my young daughters agreed upon. We will have to wait and see if that changes in the future.

Please consider subscribing and lets build this thing together! Have a great day.

Opening
Leaving my controller position at Braxton-Grant Technologies for a role in a healthcare startup was a big, bold move that I hoped would bring fresh opportunities and new challenges. The startup world was fast-paced, promising, and full of potential—at least initially. But after eight months, the reality of startup life set in, and things didn’t go as planned. I found myself facing a layoff, which was a tough blow, yet it gave me the clarity I needed to consider my options. Returning to Braxton-Grant was the easy choice, offering familiarity and stability at a time I needed it most. What I didn’t realize was that this return would also spark a new direction for me professionally.

Back at Braxton-Grant: The Catalyst for Change
When I returned to Braxton-Grant, it was clear that things hadn’t gone smoothly in my absence. They had hired an outside consulting firm to cover the role, but unfortunately, that solution fell short. Accounting work had piled up for nearly eight months, and much of it needed redoing. It was a challenging situation, but after a week reacquainting myself with Deltek Costpoint, it felt as natural as riding a bike—I was right back in the rhythm. In just five to six weeks, the backlog was gone, and we were fully current. This experience opened my eyes to a larger issue: if Braxton-Grant struggled in my absence, how many other small government contractors were grappling with the complexities of Costpoint and the accounting demands it brings?

The ‘Aha’ Moment
In catching up Braxton-Grant’s accounting processes, I had an “aha” moment. There are countless small government contractors out there who rely on Deltek Costpoint, just like Braxton-Grant, and they may lack the expertise needed to keep things running smoothly. My experience and certifications—a Master Certification in Deltek Costpoint and my role as a Primary Administrator—give me deep, hands-on knowledge of the system’s capabilities. Realizing that I could help other businesses streamline their accounting practices while they focus on growth made the decision to relaunch my consulting business clear. I knew I could fill a gap in the market for knowledgeable, dependable support with Costpoint.

Relaunching as 4G Consulting
And so, 4G Consulting was born. The “4G” stands for “Four Girls”—my four daughters—who are a big part of my motivation in everything I do. Creating a consulting business is about more than just the work for me; it’s a way to create a legacy and, hopefully, inspire my daughters along the way. This time, 4G Consulting isn’t just about filling a niche; it’s about building something meaningful, using my expertise to solve real, recurring issues for government contractors. With my specialized knowledge, I want to help these businesses streamline their accounting processes, make full use of Deltek Costpoint, and feel supported in their financial operations.

Looking Forward: Goals and Vision
My vision for 4G Consulting is simple yet ambitious: I want to be a go-to resource for small government contractors who rely on Deltek Costpoint and need to streamline their accounting practices. My goal is to take the weight of complex accounting issues off their shoulders so they can focus on what matters most—growing their businesses and fulfilling their contracts. I aim to bring efficiency, clarity, and peace of mind to my clients, knowing they have an experienced partner who truly understands their needs. With 4G Consulting, I’m not just offering a service; I’m bringing expertise and a passion for helping others succeed.

Closing Thoughts
This journey has taught me that setbacks often lead to the most unexpected and meaningful opportunities. Relaunching 4G Consulting feels like the right step forward, built on resilience, hard-won experience, and the desire to make a difference in the industry. For anyone else considering taking another shot at an old dream, I say go for it. Every challenge along the way shapes who we are and brings us closer to our purpose. For me, that purpose is clear: helping small government contractors navigate the world of accounting and supporting their path to success.
